The three area commands, which are based on local authority boundaries, deliver the local policing services.

Newcastle, Gateshead, South Tyneside, North Tyneside and Sunderland are all predominantly urban areas, while Northumberland has both urban and rural areas.

Each area command is headed by a Chief Superintendent, who operates at a strategic level, working with partners. They are supported by a team of senior police officers and police staff.

Every year we publish a Local Policing Summary for each area command and this is sent to every home and business in the force area.

The area commands are split into sectors, each with their own Neighbourhood Policing Team which is made up of police officers, detectives, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and police staff.

Area commands also have 24/7 response teams - officers who provide round-the-clock policing wherever and whenever it is needed.
